One of my (Greg) heroes, Don Carson

One of my favorite Biblical scholars is D.A. Carson. Below is his bio given by our pastor Mark Dever at a Henry Forum in March 2004.

“Our special guest this evening was born and grew up in Quebec, Canada. He went to school at McGill, where he studied both chemistry and mathematics. He then earned an MDiv from Central Baptist Seminary in Toronto. From 1970-1972 he pastored the Richmond Baptist Church in Richmond, British Columbia. He did his doctoral studies at Cambridge University from 1972-1975. There he met his wife and was married. From 1975-1978 he was at the Northwest Bapt Theo College in Vancouver, Canada, first serving as associate professor of NT, then as the founding dean of their seminary. For the last 26 years he has taught NT at the Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, Ill., (just north of Chicago). He is a prolific author, having written, co-authored or edited more than 40 volumes, not least of which are How Long, O Lord: Reflections on Evil and Suffering, expositions of various portions of the New Testament, commentaries on Matthew & John, and two recent books which bear on our topic tonight: The Difficult Doctrine of the Love of God, and Love in Hard Places.

He is also a frequent speaker around the world. He is also a published poet. And an outstanding car mechanic! Among his other affiliations, I have the joy of associating with him as a member of the Council of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals. I have a special endebtedness to him, not just for his books, which frequently aid me in my own understanding of Scripture, but also because it was our speaker who first brought me news of this church in the form of a letter from Dr. Henry, and it was our speaker who preached at my installation here as the pastor, almost 10 years ago. He and his wife Joy have two children—Tiffany & Nicholas.

He has been called “one of evangelicalism’s finest Bible students.” He is, above all, a thoughtful, faithful and fruitful disciple of Jesus Christ, one who gives evidence himself of helping Christians around the world to think carefully about Scripture and about life. It is with a sense of both privilege and joy that I ask us to welcome our speaker tonight, D. A. Carson.”
